Frequently Asked Questions
Preparing For Your Tour
What should I wear and bring?
Lake Superior creates its own weather, and it is almost always significantly cooler out on the water than it is on the dock in Grand Marais. Dressing in layers is essential. We highly recommend bringing:
* A windbreaker or light jacket
* A warm sweater or fleece sweatshirt
* Sunglasses and a hat (it gets bright on the water!)
* Sunscreen or sunblock
* Soft-soled, closed-toe shoes (sneakers or boat shoes work best; please avoid high heels)
* A camera or smartphone to capture the views
Do I need motion sickness medication?
While Lake Superior can be as smooth as glass, conditions can change. If you are prone to motion sickness, we recommend taking your preferred over-the-counter medication (like Dramamine or Bonine) before you board, according to the package directions. It is much more effective when taken ahead of time.
Can we bring food and drinks on board?
Yes! You are welcome to bring a small soft personal cooler with snacks and beverages. For safety reasons, please avoid bringing glass bottles.
Booking, Weather & Cancellations
What happens if it rains or the weather is bad?
Your safety is our top priority. If our Captain must cancel your trip due to unsafe weather or water conditions, we will notify you immediately. You will have the choice to either reschedule for another day or receive a full refund.
What is your cancellation policy?
If your plans change, we offer a full refund for cancellations made at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled departure time. Cancellations made within 48 hours, as well as no-shows, are non-refundable.
Do I need to book in advance?
We strongly recommend booking in advance by contacting us, especially during the peak summer months (July and August) and the fall colors season, as our charters can fill up quickly. Walk-ups are welcome but subject to availability.
The Onboard Experience
Is there a restroom on the boat?
Yes, our vessel is equipped with a clean, private marine restroom (often called a "head" on a boat).
Are life jackets provided?
Yes. The vessel is fully equipped with Coast Guard-approved life jackets for all passengers. While adults are not required to wear them during the cruise, they are readily accessible.
Is the boat wheelchair or stroller accessible?
Because of the shifting water levels and the design of the dock and vessel, boarding requires stepping across a small gap and navigating a couple of steps. Please contact us directly with additional questions so we can discuss your specific mobility needs and see if we can accommodate you!
Location & Arrival
Where do we meet for the tour?
We depart directly from the Grand Marais marina.
What time should we arrive?
Please arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time.
Where should we park?
Free public parking is available in the main marina lot, though it can get busy on summer weekends. Please allow a few extra minutes to find a spot.
